Caper 2010
Saturday, Feb. 27
Hey all you hep cat and kittens! Join Adventure Science Center as we flashback to the 1940’s for Caper 2010. Be the bee’s knees of the party by donning your spiffiest threads and bopping the night away at our annual costume gala. From ‘Rosie the Riveter’ to Jackson Pollock’s No. 5, 1948, the costume ideas are limitless.
The 1940s introduced frozen dinners, Tupperware and aluminum foil, the first television programs and the Slinky. The All-American Girls Baseball League took the field, Dr. Spock was in-home doctor and penicillin hit the market for widespread use. Walt Disney’s Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi amazed audiences with groundbreaking animation and the silver screen was graced by Rita Hayworth, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, & Cary Grant. Casablanca and Citizen Kane are iconic of this era. Stage performances included Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire. Oklahoma, Carousel, and Annie Get Your Gun had Agnes de Mille’s dancing in character on stage, a first on Broadway. The most popular music was being introduced by legends like the Andrews Sisters, Benny Goodman, Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra. Big Band music dominated the airways and swing dancing filled USO parties.
For us, 2010 marks the 65th anniversary of what is now known as Adventure Science Center. From our beginnings as the Children’s Museum of Nashville to our current place as one of Nashville’s top destinations, we’ve come a long way. That is why in 2010 we want to return to our roots and rediscover the zeal of the 1940s…so, “Here’s looking at you, kid!” We look forward to seeing you at Caper 2010.
Entertainment provided by Radio Daze Big Band.
Costumes are strongly encouraged, but if you are costumed-challenged, festive casual attire is always welcome. This is an age 21 and older only event.
