According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), women comprise only 28% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). To combat this inequity and inspire a life-long love of STEM Adventure Science Center hosts TWISTER yearly. This event is a one-day STEM conference for high school students who identify as female.
Since its inception in 2003, Adventure Science Center’s TWISTER Conference has impacted more than 1500 attendees and over 400 women have volunteered as presenters. February 2025 will be our 22nd annual TWISTER Conference!
"Thank you to the coordinators of this event! My daughter had a great time and came home chatting about all the possibilities there are for her [in a STEM career]."

Linnea Lyons, Ecologist and Environmental Educator
Linnea Lyons earned her B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Biodiversity from Belmont University. She is currently a graduate student at the University of Michigan’s M.S. in Environment and Sustainability program, specializing in Ecosystem Science and Management and Conservation Ecology. Her research focuses on environmental inventorying and monitoring for biodiversity conservation at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor, MI. Linnea has previously held positions as a Seasonal Naturalist at Warner Park Nature Center and a Laboratory Assistant in the environmental science labs at Belmont University. Presently, she is a Program Assistant for the Youth Conservation Programming team at MobilizeGreen, a nonprofit specializing in providing environmental education for underrepresented youth and addressing diversity gaps in the green sector. In the future, Linnea aspires to pursue a vocation in ecological conservation and biodiversity research within the park system. She hopes to use her skills and passions in field work, lab studies, and education to break barriers in scientific communication and inspire others to become creative problem-solvers and stewards of our Earth.
