August Theme: Chemistry Month

Por Adventure Science Center

Explore the curious world of chemistry this month at Adventure Science Center.

Check out a few of the activities we're facilitating this month and explore the science behind it all.

Themed programming will take place:

Early Explorer Storytime Books and Activities

  • August 5: Rover Throws a Party
    • We're having a birthday party for the Mars Curiosity rover! Early Explorers will make a rover out of cardboard and bottle caps. Guests can decorate a party hat for their rover to join the celebration. Explorers will maneuver their rovers through the rough terrain in Eureka Theatre.
  • August 12: Fairy Science
    • Early Explorers will learn about chemical reactions as they mix different things. They will make mixtures, solutions, bubbles, and colorful creations within their beakers and flasks!

Please note: Early Explorers Storytime will not take place on August 19 or August 26. Storytime will resume on Monday, September 2.

Time: Every Monday at 9:30 am
Localización: Eureka Theatre on the second floor
Ages: Pre-K (Kids Under Five)

Floor Programming

Acid-Base Reactions

Visitors will use pH strips to test different liquids. They will compare the color on the test strip to the pH scale to determine if the liquids are acidic neutral, or alkaline. They will then use the color scale to organize the liquids from most acidic to least acidic.

Slime Worms

Visitors will see what happens when water gets trapped between polymers in this ooey-gooey experiment. We will mix sodium alginate and calcium chloride to create cross-polymer linking which results in long strands of slime.

Build an Atom

Visitors will use the provided materials, and the periodic table as a reference, to make an atom. They will label the nucleus, protons, and electrons and be able to visualize how their atom is different than the other atoms on the periodic table of elements.

Elephant’s Toothpaste

Visitors will conduct an exothermic reaction by adding yeast to hydrogen peroxide. They will observe the hydrogen peroxide break down into oxygen and water and watch as the bubbles rise up and out of the bottle. It looks like toothpaste an elephant would use!

Adventure Science Center is open:

Monday, Thursday, Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Join us this month for science fun for all ages!
